I teach history as a way for students to understand their own lives and communities. I have taught in university classrooms, community colleges, and prisons, and in each setting I start from the knowledge students already carry.

Students in my courses are often first-generation, working-class, incarcerated, or all three. I build courses around primary sources, including documents, songs, and images, so students can read the past directly and bring their own questions to it.
